Navigation Maps use metaphors, allowing to focus on strategic goals, as details of the faced issue are removed from the scenario.
Navigation Maps were developed as part of the Big Lottery funded Better by Design an initiative led by the Young Foundation and Taylor Haig to enable 15 voluntary sector organisations to undertake a design-led approach to organisational innovation.
The maps enable organisations to use nautical metaphors to tell the story of what their organisation currently looks like and describe their future journey to a new ‘state of being’.
By using metaphor, the granular detail of day to day problems are removed, and people can focus on the strategic goals. The cards contain images of islands, container ships, kayaks, sharks etc. and blanks are included to encourage development of metaphors appropriate to the organisations situation – whirlpools, safe harbours, new captains etc.
